Mi Casa Resource Center® Names New Chief Executive Officer

Angeles Ortega is named to lead the nonprofit, which works to advance economic opportunity for underserved Metro Denver communities.

Mi Casa Resource Center® will celebrate its 45th anniversary in 2021.

January 25, 2021 — DENVER: Following an extensive search, Mi Casa Resource Center® has named Angeles Ortega as its next CEO. Ortega is an experienced nonprofit and public sector leader who has dedicated her career to supporting the well-being and advancement of diverse communities.

In her role as CEO, Ortega is responsible for providing strategic direction, overall leadership and management to support Mi Casa Resource Center®’s mission-based work to create pathways to employment and income growth through career and business development. Ortega will oversee the financial management, program and administrative operations, as well as fund development efforts for the organization, which employs 31 full-time and two part-time employees.

Ortega comes to Mi Casa Resource Center® from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, where she served as Director of Advancement, overseeing a team of fundraisers responsible for raising $2-4M annually to support operations and strategic initiatives. Prior, Ortega was with the Census Bureau, first in Charlotte, North Carolina, and then in Denver. Ortega worked across a 12-state western region to disseminate Census products, create data workshops and presentations, and develop new partnership agreements with diverse organizations to support participation in the decennial Census. While in North Carolina, Ortega also served as the executive director of the Latin American Coalition, a Charlotte-based nonprofit that partners with Latino families to create greater access and opportunity, while making space for others to learn and connect with the community.

“Angeles is a tremendously well-rounded leader whose business acumen and expertise is only matched by her warmth, charisma and kindness,” said Shannon Corcoran, vice president of operations strategy and tooling for Guild Education and the chair of the Mi Casa Resource Center®’s board of directors. “We could not be happier that Angeles is joining our team and will be leading the next chapter of Mi Casa Resource Center®’s development.”

Originally from Mexico, Ortega studied languages at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro and nonprofit management at the University of Nevada, Reno.  She earned an MBA from Queens University of Charlotte in 2009, and in 2016 completed the Latino Leadership Institute at the University of Denver.

“Angeles is able to earn the trust, confidence and respect of her staff and drive her team to achieve their professional best while advancing key business goals,” said George Sparks, president and CEO of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. “She accomplishes this with a unique combination of data-driven decision making and a collaborative and empathic leadership style that inspires and motivates the people around her. Mi Casa Resource Center® is a community treasure and Angeles will have a tremendous impact.”

Ortega, a bilingual and bicultural leader who is able to easily navigate and inherently understand diverse perspectives, is reflective of Mi Casa Resource Center®’s own history and impact. In the 1970s, Mi Casa Resource Center® began offering job-training programs for women, especially Latinas, to help them break into higher paying jobs. The organization soon expanded to include bilingual business development services as another pathway to economic success for women, immigrants and other underserved entrepreneurs. Today, Mi Casa Resource Center® is known as a home of opportunity for all people, providing culturally responsive career and business pathway services that are accessible and affordable to everyone. In 2021, the organization will celebrate its 45th anniversary.

“I have long admired the work of Mi Casa Resource Center® to create new economic opportunities for underserved career seekers and entrepreneurs,” said Ortega. “I am absolutely thrilled to be joining Mi Casa’s team of exceptionally talented and committed professionals. I look forward to supporting the important work of Mi Casa staff, our participants, and our many community partners and supporters.”
