Last year I realized I needed a career change. I had been in retail jobs for a long time, but I felt stuck – my pay wasn’t improving and I didn’t see a future. I have a lot of customer service experience and I got a lot of compliments about my cash handling skills, but retail didn’t excite me anymore. I had always thought about going into accounting, but I didn’t know where to start.
Then, last fall, I got an email from the coordinator at the first-time homebuyer assistance program I was enrolled in about the Financial Services Technical Training at Mi Casa Resource Center. I remembered hearing about Mi Casa through my children, who have been involved with Mi Casa’s Youth Development program throughout middle and high school, but I didn’t know much about what else the organization had to offer.
I contacted the Career Recruiter, Emily, the next day and signed up to take the TABE test – a test to measure adult education skills – a requirement for enrollment in the Financial Services Training. I failed the test the first time and felt so discouraged that I wanted to give up, but Emily encouraged me and made me believe I was capable. I passed the test the second time I took it and started the class immediately.
I knew I was bettering myself and my life by taking this training. I could tell this was the type of job I wanted, and I could see a future in banking. Our first guest speaker was from a local credit union and I knew right away that I wanted to work there. And that’s exactly what happened – I got hired there as a teller as soon as I graduated from the class in November 2018. I really fit in here and I enjoy waking up and going to work every day. And having a better paying job has helped take some of the strain off my family life.
I really love my new job and I’m so grateful to Mi Casa for connecting me to these opportunities. Everything they taught us in the Financial Services Training was exactly what we needed to know for a career in banking. And the staff at Mi Casa is still there for me. Even since I got hired they’re still checking in on me to see how I’m doing, and I really appreciate that. I want to tell everyone I know “if you want to change, Mi Casa will help you get there.”
